This is the third in a series of books by Lucy Micklethwait, aimed at introducing the very young to great works of art by artists such as Renoir and Millais. Eighteen full colour reproductions of masterpieces have been selected to illustrate children's everyday activities, such as washing, dancing and sleeping.
We are fortunate to have many telented contempory illustrators bringing innovative art forms to young children through the medium of picture books. Still there is much to be gained from early exposure to classical works of fine art, which are not always as accessible to the very young.
The success of the book will perhaps be dependent on the imagination and enthusiasm of the reader to engage a young audience with the pictures, since the text offers little guidance. However, even without adult input, it is likely that the beauty of these pictures will work their magic by subtle transfusion and hopefully encourage a lifelong pleasure and appreciation for art.
