[Armadillo 7.4 Winter 2005]

Eleven-year old Dawn Buckle is a refreshingly different heroine, her chief asset being her inconspicuousness. She is constantly overlooked until she is chosen to be a spy for P.S.S.T. (Pursuit of Scheming Spies and Traitors). After training in London, Dawn is sent, with a false identity and a false mother, to find one of the team?'s missing spies, Angela Bradshaw. Angela's grandson, Felix, manages to muscle in on the assignment, bringing with him his hairy dog Haltwhistle. Mystery surrounds the villain, Murdo Meek.

Gusto for the bizarre may either irritate or delight. There are weird organisations, and freakish characters with names like Jagdish and Nathan Slipper. The story picks up speed and ends with a thrilling climax. As in a good detective story, the denouement is both surprising and satisfying. And Dawn has grown. An entertaining book. It may also stimulate interest in words. The meaning of 'pteronophobia' is important.
