This is a relaxing, well-structured adventure story with brave heroine, repellent villain, mysteries, plots and dangers, but the setting here is out of the ordinary: Edwardian times, high society, with most of the action in Egypt. Even the heroine?'s pet animal is exotic: a tiny monkey bought in the Cairo Bazaar.
Thirteen-year-old Lady Violet Winters thirsts for excitement. When her parents take her on holiday to Egypt together with her father's new ward, an American boy, Garth, adventures begin. On board ship Violet and Garth become suspicious of Count Kapolski, and later discover he is a tomb robber and ruthless enemy of their friend, Nicholas. In the life-and-death struggle of the climax, without adult help, Violet and Garth confront the enemy.
The sights, sounds and smells of Egypt are vivid in the narrative.
