[Armadillo 7.3 Autumn 2005]

Justin Somper's Vampirates brings together the traditional tale of pirates and the vampire myth. The first of the books is Demons of the Ocean, which introduces the two main characters Connor and Grace Tempest.

They are twins who have been recently orphaned after their father?s death. Rather than being adopted by anyone in their town, they decide to escape to sea alone.

However, a vicious perilous storm capsizes their boat and the two children are separated. A different ship picks up each twin from the sea.

Grace, finds herself on a mysterious ship where she is kept locked in a room. Connor has been taken aboard a pirate ship, commanded by an eccentric Captain with a crew of equally diverse characters.

The book does immediately bring the reader into the world of ships and shantys in a fluid writing style. However, although the story is set in the year 2505, the setting and place evoke images of the eighteenth century, a time synonymous with pirates. As a futuristic book, the reader is to expect a new world, with greater technology, but the world Somper creates does not capture this.

The time setting aside, this is an action packed book, which will appeal both to those who enjoy the mystique of vampires and fans of Pirates of the Caribbean.
