Sam Palmer has always been interested in insects; however, since moving to the country and missing his town friends, this interest has developed into more of an obsession. When Sam is involved in an accident whilst riding his bike he wakes up to find himself in an alien world where he finds that he is already known as the subject of a prophecy.
He is pursued by two different societies - one that wants to cause destruction in the human world (Vermia) and another which wants to save them (Vahizi). Sam is hunted by the sinister and ferocious dog boys and narrowly escapes being killed by giant ants with the help of a courageous Vahizian girl called Skipper, who teaches him how to pilot wasps and horseflies in the fight against Vermia. Meanwhile, in the human world, Sam's body lies in a coma whilst Sam's feelings for Skipper deepen and makes him question whether he really wants to return to it.The book has a bittersweet ending but one which gives optimism for the future.
Steve Voake is the headmaster of a primary school in Somerst and used to get up at 3am in order to find the time to write the book. I found the subject matter fascinating and the relationship between Skipper and Sam is sensitively portrayed. A thoughtful read for ages 10 plus.
