[Armadillo 7.3 Autumn 2005]

On the morning of Caitlin's 16th birthday her older sister runs away from home. Her sudden departure leaves Caitlin in a well of despair; she can never fill the gap left by Cass, the popular, clever and beautiful first-born child in whose shadow she has grown up. Being so lost herself, it is almost inevitable that Caitlin should find another lost soul to compound the damage: enter new boyfriend, Rogerson. He pulls Caitlin into the dark and violent world of domestic violence; she recognizes the danger, but cannot break free.

American culture reaches out to bite you from the pages of this novel, but the characters draw the reader in. The relationship between Caitlin and Rogerson, and the insight into why Cass ran away from the comfort and security of her American-pie family, is particularly well handled. You will be rooting for Caitlin and hoping she comes through in this straightforward, sometimes powerful story of a teenager's struggle to find out who she really is.
