It is often difficult to do justice to Jan Mark's books; she writes with such breathtakingly sustained excellence that you simply run out of superlatives. But, even placed against her own øbest" titles, her new book stands out.

It is set on the bleak world of Demeter where a political prisoner is billeted on 11 year old Demetria's family. He is a gentle, thoughtful man whose ideas and principles make Demetria begin to examine the øfacts" she has been taught all her life. She learns that women do not automatically sink in water, that things can travel in the air and that casual male violence is not normal. With these true facts behind her she makes a huge leap of faith and tries to escape her harsh environment. Like all the best SF, Riding Tycho is partly an exercise in moral philosophy. It is also a thrilling adventure that grips from first to last.
