It's ten years since we've heard anything of Mildred Hubble, Maud, Enid or Miss Hardbroom and we all know what boarding establishment has knocked Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches off the top of the league table for schools of magic. But now that J.K.Rowling's books have become increasingly darker, it is a breath of fresh air to be back with the cack-handed Mildred.
Here, complete with Jill Murphy's own delightful black and white line drawings, we see her doing an over-the-top Rapunzel on her hair, having the usual trouble flying and turning herself into an ant. (Don't ask!)
It is genuinely a book that newly competent readers could enjoy for themselves and not the slightest bit morally ambiguous. Absolutely ideal material, together with the previous four titles, for hooking them on books.
