Diana Wynne Jones has returned to Chrestomanci Castle with this new title. Although there has been one intervening novella, this is the first real sequel to Charmed Life and once more the focus of the story is on Cat Chant - Chrestomanci-in-waiting. There has been a regrettable falling-off in quality in recent years from the massively talented Wynne Jones so I'm particularly pleased to be able to say that The Pinhoe Egg is a real success.

We've been away from this world for a while but Chrestomanci's dressing gowns are as splendid as ever, Cat's magic as strange and unpredictable, and the ambiance of the world as thick with magic and myth as only Wynne Jones at the top of her form can be.

With an appealing new character in the person of Marianne Pinhoe and a widening of the focus as we explore the villages around Chestomanci Castle, fans will find much to appreciate.

It's not quite at the dazzling heights of Charmed Life but this is a strong sequel and it's exciting to see one of my favourite authors regaining her form with this latest addition to the canon.
