This short story collection, collected and edited by Tony Bradman, deals poignantly and sensitively with the topical and emotive issue of asylum-seekers. The crucial element and key to its powerful resonance is the successful use of the child's eye view. Each story in its own unique telling speaks with a child's voice of truth and unerring sense of justice. The immediate concerns of confusion, fear and sense of loss (as represented by a misplaced doll in one tale) take centre stage over the adult world of political and economic agendas.

The journeys of the asylum-seekers are individual and yet, share in the basic human need and pursuit of survival. Many different situations are depicted from actual migration through people-smuggling to the settling down to life in a new and strange country. The writers are comprised of actual asylum seekers or those who have worked closely with them. These writing criteria lend an authentic feel of first-hand experience.

This is a powerful collection and one which could especially prove useful in a group discussion setting. In today's political climate of immigration controversy, these stories can only help clarify and highlight legitimate asylum needs and concerns.
