Gripping, thrilling, breathtaking - I loved this book! A British myth packed with drama, magic and adventure, told in a lively and accessible way by a master wordsmith.
Morpurgo draws readers in with personal tones, then keeps us firmly rapt with humourous touches, lyrical language and vivid portrayals of myriad human emotions. Action-packed and yet dripping with sumptuous description which transports us to another age, as well as celebrating the timeless and universal (the profound beauty of the changing seasons is exquisitely evoked as Gawain waits for a year to pass).
The book is appealingly laid out, with large emerald green text and stylised borders. Foreman?'s watercolour-and-pastel illustrations glow bright and atmospheric on almost every page and there are some spectacular double page spreads.
Children will relish the monsters, battles and excitement in this easy to read story and perceptive readers will appreciate the subtle depths of symbolism which suffuse the text with the rich metaphorical quality of the original.
A classic.
